Confirm the symptom

This guide covers a buggy that drives normally in one direction but does nothing, or almost nothing, in the other: forward works and reverse is dead, or the reverse. The controls otherwise behave, and the buggy is not in limp mode. Try each direction a few times to confirm which one is missing and whether it is completely dead or just weak.

Worn or dirty switch contacts

The forward-reverse switch sends a small signal that tells the controller which way to drive. Its contacts wear and can go open in one position while still working in the other, which is exactly the symptom of one direction being dead. This is the most common cause and where you should start.

1Test the switch for continuity in the dead direction

With the key off and the pack isolated, unplug the switch and, using the wiring diagram to identify the terminals, measure continuity across the switch as you select the dead direction, then the working one for comparison.

Corroded connector or broken wire

A corroded connector or a broken wire in the direction circuit gives the same result as a failed switch, because the signal never reaches the controller. Check the connection at the switch first, then the wire back to the controller, before condemning the switch.

Inspect the switch connector for corrosion or spread terminals and clean it, then use the wiring diagram to check continuity along the direction wire from the switch to the controller.

Broken lever or detent

Sometimes the switch is electrically fine but the lever, shaft or detent is broken, so the direction does not physically select. This is easy to feel and see.

3Check the switch selects and holds each position

Operate the switch by hand and feel for a positive selection into each position, watching that the internal mechanism moves and holds rather than flopping loose.

Controller fault in one direction

If the switch and its wiring are sound, the controller itself can be at fault in one direction, though this is less common. Reading the fault code with the fault code guide is the way to confirm it rather than assuming.

Book an engineer if the switch and wiring test good and the fault sits in the controller, if you cannot get a clear continuity result, or if you would rather not work in the direction circuit. A buggy stuck with no reverse is awkward and, on a slope, a safety matter, so it is worth putting right promptly. An engineer can test the switch, wiring and controller and fit the correct part.
