Every winter, Canadian owners ask the same question: can the golf cart earn its keep in the snow, or should it hibernate from November to April? The honest answer sits in the middle. A golf cart is not a snowmobile and never will be, but on a few centimetres of snow over a firm, plowed surface, a well-prepared cart with the right tires is a genuinely useful winter tool for properties, campgrounds, farms and cottage lanes. - Light snow, up to roughly 5 to 10 centimetres over a firm plowed base, is workable with all-terrain tires or chains. Deep or wet snow is not, and drifts will beach the chassis.
- Most carts are two-wheel drive with limited weight over the driven axle, so traction, not power, is the limit.

- Cold cuts battery output and range hard, so plan winter routes at half the summer distance for lead-acid carts.

What a golf cart can and cannot do in snow
Start with the physics. A typical golf cart weighs 400 to 700 kilograms, drives only the rear wheels through an open differential, and carries modest ground clearance, often around 10 to 15 centimetres on a standard cart. That combination means the cart follows a simple rule: it handles snow shallower than its clearance on surfaces firm enough to grip, and fails at everything beyond that. A plowed lane with a dusting is easy. Ten centimetres of fresh snow over gravel is workable with the right tires. Twenty centimetres of wet snow will spin the wheels, then beach the floor pan, and once a cart is high-centred in snow it is going nowhere without a tow. Lifted carts with all-terrain tires stretch the limits usefully, which is one reason lifted builds are popular in cottage country, but no build turns a cart into a snow machine. Wet, heavy snow near the freezing point is the worst case of all, packing into the wheel wells and tread until even chained wheels lose their bite, so a mild day after a dump can be worse driving than a cold, dry one.
Traction: tires and chains decide everything
Standard turf tires are designed to protect grass, with shallow, smooth tread that packs with snow and polishes ice. On winter surfaces they are close to useless, and swapping away from them is the single biggest upgrade. All-terrain tires with open, knobby tread self-clear far better and grip packed snow acceptably. For genuine winter work, tire chains made for golf cart sizes are the strongest tool: fitted to the driven wheels they bite into packed snow and ice in a way no rubber matches. Check clearance around the wheel wells before buying, fit them snug, and keep speeds low, since chains on cleared pavement are rough on both the surface and the cart. Cold is the second half of the problem
Even with perfect traction, winter driving runs on a handicapped battery. Cold slashes usable capacity, hardest for lead-acid, which can lose 30 to 50 percent of its capacity in deep cold, so a route that was a quarter of the summer range becomes half of the winter one. Plan accordingly and come home with margin, because a walk back at minus 15 is a different proposition from one in July. Lithium carts hold their output better in the cold and are the stronger winter choice, but they carry one absolute rule: the pack must never be charged below freezing, so a cart that works outdoors all day needs to warm up indoors before plugging in, or needs a pack with built-in heating. Storage between uses matters too. A cart kept in even a modestly heated space starts each winter day with a warmer, stronger pack than one cold-soaked overnight in a shed. Winter driving habits that keep you out of trouble
- Drive at walking-pace speeds on snow and ice. Golf cart brakes act on the rear wheels, and stopping distances on packed snow stretch several times beyond dry pavement.
- Steer and brake gently and separately. Asking for both at once is how carts slide straight on at corners.
- Add weight over the rear axle, a sandbag or two on the cargo deck, to help the driven wheels bite.
- Carry a small shovel and a tow strap. The first time the cart beaches in a drift, both pay for themselves.

The decision comes down to your property and your patience. If winter use means short runs on plowed lanes, hauling firewood, luggage or feed, then a cart with all-terrain tires or chains, a healthy battery, rear weight and a rinse-off habit will earn its keep all season, and a lithium-equipped build does it best.
