Of the three big golf cart brands, Club Car is the kindest to anyone trying to date a vehicle, because the model year is stamped into the serial number itself. No dealer visit, no guesswork from the bodywork: find the plate, read two digits, and you have the year. This guide shows you where the plate lives on each model, how to decode what you find, and why pinning the year down matters for parts, batteries and what the cart is worth in the UK market.
- Club Car serials start with letters identifying the model, followed by two digits for the model year.
- On a Precedent, Tempo or Onward, look in or below the passenger-side dash or kick panel; on a DS, under the dash area on a riveted plate.
- The two-digit year needs the model's production era to pick the decade, so note the model as well as the digits.
- The year drives parts fitment, battery replacement choices and resale value.
Where to find the serial number
The location moved around as the models changed, but it is always in the dash area rather than on the chassis rails. On the long-running DS, built from the early 1980s, the plate is a small riveted one under the dash, commonly described as under the passenger-side glovebox or to the right of the pedals depending on year. On the Precedent, which replaced the DS from 2004, and on the later Tempo and Onward, the serial is on a metal plate or sticker inside or beneath the passenger-side glovebox, or on the kick panel below it. If a sticker has been painted over or lost, a Club Car dealer can usually identify the vehicle from photographs and any numbers found on the frame, so photograph whatever you find rather than guessing.
How to decode a Club Car serial number
A modern Club Car serial reads like this example: PH0901-123456. The opening letters are the model designation, the code Club Car assigns to each model and configuration; the company publishes an official model and serial prefix directory on clubcar.com if you want to match yours precisely. The next two digits are the model year, so the 09 in the example means 2009, and the following two digits are the production week of that year. The digits after the hyphen are the vehicle's own unique number. Two aftermarket references we cross-checked, Golf Carts Unlimited and Golf Cart Garage, describe the same structure, and it has held for decades of production.
What the year matters for
Three things, mainly. Parts: controllers, chargers, body panels and suspension parts changed across the years, and suppliers list them by model and year, so an accurate year saves ordering the wrong part twice. Batteries: the year, together with the battery compartment layout, decides which replacement sets and lithium conversions fit, and battery age is the single biggest lever on a used cart's price. Value: the age curve for Club Cars drops hardest early and flattens later, as our depreciation guide explains, so a year either way matters most on younger vehicles. Once you have the year, the valuation tool turns it into a typical UK value range in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the serial number on a Club Car?+
In the dash area. On a DS, on a small riveted plate under the dash on the passenger side; on a Precedent, Tempo or Onward, on a plate or sticker in or beneath the passenger-side glovebox or on the kick panel.
How do I tell the year from a Club Car serial number?+
The serial starts with letters identifying the model, and the two digits immediately after them are the model year: PH09 means a 2009 Precedent. The two digits after that are the production week. Use the model's production era to pick the right decade.
What if the plate is missing or unreadable?+
Photograph the dash area, any frame stampings and the vehicle overall, and ask a Club Car dealer or a cart specializt to identify it. Club Car also publishes its model and serial prefix directory online, which helps match a partial number.
Why does the exact year matter?+
Parts are listed by model and year, replacement battery sets and lithium conversions vary by year, and the year feeds the valuation. It is one of the first questions any buyer or parts supplier will ask.
